Scotland & The Highland Fling

This term we have been learning about Scotland and are now starting to learn the Highland Fling
with Room 8.

Joanne has been coming in to help us work on the finer points of the Highland Fling. She has competed in Highland Dancing since she was 4. We are very lucky to have someone who is sooooooooo good at this helping us.

The children have been getting better and better the more we practice. They are having heaps of fun and are using lots of determination and enjoyment while learning about this dance.

Check out the video below to help you practice at home. I also reckon you should be teaching your Parents how to do the Parkvale Fling!!!!

Make a Red Poppy

Checkout these cool Poppies!!!

I wounder if anyone could make these at home?
Give it a try, take a photo and show the class!!!!

Watch this video to help you make your poppy

Here is what you need to do!!!

Make a red poppy

Red poppies are traditionally considered an emblem of remembrance, which is why they are often a big part of Anzac Day services. Why not make these easy paper flower poppies with your kids this Anzac Day to commemorate those who have given their lives.

What you need:

  • 1 x piece of red A4 paper
  • 1 x green chenille stem
  • glue
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • ruler
Measure and cut two 10cm x 10cm squares from the red paper.
Fold each square into quarters (see video) and then fold on the diagonal, so that each folded edge meets and the cut edge is along the top.
Now mark out a curve on the triangle (see video).
Cut along that curve.
When you open it out, you should have a red flower shape. Make two.
Snip a hole in the centre of each red flower shape, push the chenille stem through the centre and tie a knot or twist to keep it in place.
Add a dab of glue to the underside of the flower where it meets the chenille stem, for good measure.

Good Luck

Over the last coupe of weeks we have been looking at ANZAC day and what this means to us as kiwis. Room 17 thought it worked in well with what Parkvale PRIDE is.

We have learnt a lot about the brave men and woman who went to Gallipoli, Turkey all those years ago.

Please take the time to watch Room 17's assembly item about ANZAC day. Below that is a photo story that Room 17 made using Mr Dickson's photos from his trip to Gallipoli, Turkey.

Then please check out the cool work that Rosie from Room 17 did on her presentation about ANZAC.

Looking at all of this, you can see that Room 17 have taken a lot of PRIDE in all the work they have completed on ANZAC. This show real ANZAC spirit.

The Ginger Beer experience

Over the last month Room 17 have been learning about the process of fermentation of Ginger Beer. We tied this in with PRIDE by making sure that we were looking after the Ginger Beer bug that we grew. After the process of starting bug and feeding it to grow carbon-dioxide and ferment the flavor we eventual mixed all the ingredients together. The ingredients included ginger, sugar, yeast, lemon, water.

After three weeks of feeding, brewing, bottling and waiting we eventually got to taste the Ginger Beer.

Check out the cool photos below of the whole process of making the Ginger Beer.
